The US Postal Service indicates that over 40 million people change their address every year and on average families and businesses move roughly once every five years. Many of them are your best customers - customers that you want to keep, customers that you can't afford to lose. Unfortunately, in all likelihood very few of them told you of their move.

If you plan on keeping these customers, it's of utmost importance that your mail reaches them (wherever they are). It makes perfect business sense to make sure that the information you have for each and every customer is absolutely up to date.

They Moved... Now What?

It's not your customer's fault. Moving is hard enough. Most people are so tied up with the details of a move that they forget to let everyone know about their new address. They file a Change of Address form with the Postal Service and hope for the best.

The Postal Service keeps track of the information on the Change of Address (COA) forms and stores it in a system called FASTForward. FASTForward tracks approximately 13 months of COA information and is updated once a week.

Since July 1997, all addresses on mailings that receive discounts for First-Class Mail service, whether presorted or automation rate, must undergo name and address correction within 180 days of the mailing.
